The Collecting of Old Master Drawings in Italy, from Giorgio Vasari onwards

Main Objective of the Project:
The aim of the project is to offer 12 young curators and conservators a full immersion training course
of around two weeks, based in Florence at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno. The course will include
museum visits, workshops and seminars (in English and Italian) in order to enable applicants to study closely
and therefore familiarise themselves with the collections of the Horne Foundation Museum,
the Biblioteca Marucelliana, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, the Castello Sforzesco in Milan
and the Musei Civici, Verona. The Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, founded by Giorgio Vasari
and Vincenzo Borghini in 1563 under the aegis of Cosimo I de Medici, operates today exactly as
its founders intended: namely to design for the present, but to study the past through the drawings
and written testimonies of the Accademia’s teachers, and to pass this legacy of ideas
and works down to new generations. As ‘Padre di tutte le arti’, Michelangelo Buonarroti was
the first Academician to be elected. In his name and with his legacy, the Accademia forged its future.
To this day the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno has continued actively to promote research, conservation
and study from its headquarters, now based in Via Orsanmichele 4, a building that preserves vestiges
of more than four centuries of history.
The goal of the project is to ensure that participants have the opportunity to immerse themselves full-time:
in experiencing technical and scientific issues; in historical and archival analysis and research;
and in the preservation and exhibition of Italian master drawings, with the result that they will be able
to make independent decisions in relation to research, acquisition, conservation, and ultimately
the enrichment of collections. The seminars will be held in Italian and English.
Participant Requirements:
This project is aimed primarily at young curators and conservation and restoration specialists
who have proven experience in the specific field of works on paper (drawings and prints).
Applicants are required to have worked in museums, collections or galleries,
or to have worked under contract in the preparation of exhibitions continuously for at least 3 years.
Academic requirements:
BA, MA or PhD in Art History with a specialisation – which will need to be verified
– in advanced research in the graphic arts (drawings and prints) in Italy, France,
The Netherlands, Northern Europe, Spain, Germany or Eastern Europe
from the 16th to the 19th It is important that prospective
candidates have a working knowledge of Italian (read and spoken).
Application Procedure:
Applications must include a description of the candidate’s areas of specific interest,
a CV, the names of three referees, and a letter of reference.

Motivazione del progetto e principale obiettivo:
Obiettivo del progetto è offrire a 12 giovani curatori e conservatori un percorso formativo
full immersion di circa due settimane, con base a Firenze presso l’Accademia delle Arti del Disegno
e visite, workshop e laboratori (in lingua inglese e italiana) per conoscere e studiare da vicino le raccolte
del Museo della Fondazione Horne, della Biblioteca Marucelliana, dell’Opificio delle Pietre Dure,
della raccolta del Castello Sforzesco di Milano e dei Musei Civici di Verona.
L’Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, fondata da Giorgio Vasari, Cosimo I de Medici e Vincenzo Borghini nel 1563
opera in Firenze nel solco di quanto progettato e voluto dai suoi fondatori: progettare il presente, studiare
il passato attraverso le testimonianze scritte e grafiche dei maestri e trasmettere alle nuove generazioni questo
patrimonio di idee e di opere. Michelangelo Buonarroti fu il primo ad essere eletto Accademico con il titolo
di “padre di tutte le arti” e con il suo nome e la sua eredità, si è confrontato tutto il percorso
successivo dell’Accademia che dal 1784 ha dato vita ad una scuola che oggi ha il nome di Accademia di Belle Arti
di Firenze e che ha sede in via Ricasoli a Firenze e che ha proseguito la sua attività di ricerca, di conservazione
e di studio nell’Istituto che oggi ha sede in Via Orsammichele n. 4 e che ospita al suo interno le vestigia
di oltre quattro secoli di Storia.
Il goal del progetto è far sì che i partecipanti abbiano l’opportunità di compiere un’esperienza completa full-time
in merito alle problematiche tecniche e scientifiche, all’analisi e alla ricerca storico artistica e archivistica,
alla conservazione ed esposizione dei disegni antichi italiani e siano in grado di intraprendere iniziative autonome
di ricerca, acquisizione, conservazione, valorizzazione.
Requisiti per i partecipanti:
Il progetto è rivolto soprattutto a giovani curatori e conservatori, ovvero giovani specialisti della conservazione
e restauro che abbiano già un’esperienza di lavoro accertata e dimostrabile nel campo specifico delle opere d’arte
cartacee (disegni e stampe) e svolgano attività in musei, collezioni e gallerie, oppure abbiano lavorato a contratto
nella preparazione di mostre o allestimenti in modo continuativo da almeno 3 anni.
Requisiti accademici:
Laurea/master/PhD in Storia dell’arte e una specializzazione comprovata di ricerca e produzione scientifica
nell’ambito delle arti grafiche (disegni e stampe) di altre aree geografiche (Francia, Paesi Bassi,
Nord Europa, Spagna, Germania, Est Europa) dal XVI al XIX secolo e una certa familiarità con la lingua
italiana (letta e parlata) sono titoli preferenziali
